Sophia Riley
The Protagonist
This is my protagonist for a solo campaign in The Cthulhu Solo Adventure Generator.
The Cthulhu Solo Adventure Generator is a solo role-playing game. It’s set in a fictional universe where relentless cosmic horror simmers just below the surface of everyday life. It takes place in the 1920s and is based on the short stories, novels and novelettes of H.P. Lovecraft, whose Cthulhu Mythos have been contributed to and expanded on by multiple other authors over the years. The rules are compatible with most d100-based role-playing games that are Cthulhu-related.
The Cthulhu Solo Adventure Generator is available as a printed book on Amazon and DriveThruRPG (and as a PDF).
Name: Sophia Riley
Age: 25
Occupation: Ensemble Actress, The Collier Theatre (Off-Broadway)
Sophia Riley is a bright, fiercely ambitious young woman with dreams of stardom. She lives in a small, walk-up apartment, but her true home is the stage. She’s part of the vibrant, often desperate, artistic scene of New York. She makes a living as part of the ensemble at ‘The Collier Theatre’ a lesser known off-Broadway theatre.
She’s ambitious and unmarried. Many old fashioned people are shocked by her independence. Aside from working hard, she’s also taking care of her widowed mother who used to be a stage actress too until marrying Sophia’s now deceased father.
Sophia is petite and thin, with a body honed by the physical demands of stage work. She has a pretty, heart-shaped face dominated by large, expressive green eyes. Her hair is a cascade of dark bobbed curls, a modern style. She favors practical but stylish flapper dresses when out with friends, but wears simple, dark clothing for rehearsals. There is a slight, almost unnoticeable weariness around her eyes that she expertly hides with makeup and a dazzling smile.
Sophia is a spark of life. She’s known for her sharp, witty comebacks and her almost manic energy that she channels into every performance.
Desires:
Sophia wants to become a famous movie star in Hollywood. This is her ultimate prize. It represents escape, wealth, and validation.
Sophia wants to escape the crushing poverty she’s experienced since her father’s death. She associates money with security and control.
Sophia wants to make her mother proud. She feels the weight of her mother’s lost dreams and is driven by a desperate need to prove herself.
Skills:
Sophia is a highly competent, if not yet famous, stage actress. She excels at embodying roles and understanding subtext.
Sophia’s wit is her first line of defense. She uses sarcasm and sharp observations to keep people at a distance, to control conversations, and to hide her own insecurities. It’s a defense mechanism born from a fear of being seen as weak or a failure.
Sophia’s not a trained boxer, but she’s fast, vicious, and resourceful. She uses her small size to her advantage, aiming for vulnerable spots (knees, throat, eyes). This is a side of her she rarely shows, a grit that lies just beneath the theatrical polish.
Key Relationships:
Chloe Holland (Best Friend)
Chloe is Sophia’s anchor to reality. She is a fellow actress at The Collier, perhaps with a little more talent but a lot less ambition. She is the confidante for Sophia’s wildest dreams and her deepest fears.
Chloe is the one who notices when Sophia is pushing herself too hard, who tries to temper her burning ambition with pragmatism. Their bond is the one truly pure and grounding thing in Sophia’s life.
Tiffany Riley (Mother)
A former stage actress whose own career was cut short by marriage. Tiffany loves her daughter fiercely but is terrified at the thought of her daughter making a living in the cutthroat world of the stage.
Sophia’s visits are a mix of genuine affection and a sense of duty; she brings money and news of her progress, trying to prove to her mother that she will succeed where Tiffany did not. Tiffany sees the dangerous fire in Sophia’s eyes and fears it will consume her.
